Why GLP-1 Medications Work and Why They Aren't the Whole Weight Loss Solution.

Over the past few years, medications like semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro®, Zepbound®) have transformed obesity treatment. Many people assume these medications work simply because they reduce appetite. The truth is that they do much more than that. GLP-1 medications work by mimicking a hormone your body naturally produces after you eat called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). This hormone is an important part of your body's metabolism and helps regulate communication between your gut, pancreas, brain, and stomach. When GLP-1 signaling is enhanced, several beneficial things happen simultaneously.

GLP-1 medications help:

Increase feelings of fullness, making it easier to eat smaller portions.

Slow stomach emptying, helping you stay satisfied longer after meals.

Reduce food cravings and the constant "food noise" many people experience.

Improve blood sugar regulation by stimulating insulin release only when glucose levels are elevated.

Reduce glucagon secretion, which decreases excess glucose production by the liver.

Improve insulin sensitivity over time as weight loss occurs.

For many people, these combined effects make weight loss feel achievable for the first time in years.

Why Do Some People Lose More Weight Than Others?

GLP-1 medications are powerful, but they don't correct every factor contributing to weight gain. Many women over 40 are also experiencing: Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause, Thyroid dysfunction, Chronic inflammation, Poor sleep, Elevated cortisol from chronic stress, Insulin resistance, Loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia), Nutrient deficiencies or Gut health imbalances. If these underlying issues aren't addressed, you may lose weight initially but struggle to maintain your results once the medication is stopped.

The Biggest Mistake We See

Many people are prescribed a GLP-1 medication without a comprehensive plan to protect their metabolism. Weight loss alone is not the goal. Healthy weight loss is. Without enough protein, strength training, and appropriate nutrition, a portion of the weight lost may come from lean muscle mass, not just body fat. Since muscle is essential for maintaining metabolism, preserving muscle should be a priority during any weight-loss program. At Win from Within Wellness, we focus on helping patients lose fat while preserving muscle, supporting long-term metabolic health rather than simply reducing the number on the scale.

GLP-1 Medications Are a Tool and Not a Cure

Think of a GLP-1 medication like a cast for a broken bone. The cast supports healing, but it doesn't strengthen the muscles around the injury or prevent another fracture. Similarly, a GLP-1 medication can make healthy lifestyle changes easier by reducing hunger and improving blood sugar regulation. However, lasting success still depends on building habits that support lifelong health.

That includes, eating adequate protein to preserve muscle, Strength training regularly, prioritizing sleep, managing stress, supporting hormone balance, optimizing gut health, addressing nutrient deficiencies and building sustainable eating habits.
